Heatfur sighed. he padded up to mapleleaf. "Need any help?"

"Huh?" Mapleleaf cocked her head confusedly, lost in her thoughts. "Oh, yeah..." Her eyes snapped back into focus and her mind back into reality. "Oh, not really. It's just that the moss needs clearing, but I bet we wouldn't mind that now with dead bodies just lying in the clearing--" She stopped short, sad.

"Mapleleaf," Rainpelt whispered, "Would you like me to bury the dead cats?"

Mapleleaf's pelt prickled. "We should have cerimonies first, she mewed slowly....

"Oh. Yes, my bad. I forgot." Rainpelt blushed under her pelt.

"It's okay, warriors aren't expected to know everything." As she said this, Mapleleaf turned beet red. So I'm saying I'm suppossed to know everything!

"Do you need any help with anything else?" A small, smarty voice piped up from the shadows. Blackkit stepped forwards. She blended into the dark nursery very well.
"I can go grab Redkit, if you need to do any heavy lifting. I'm sure he wouldn't mind leaving Whitekit's side, for a while." Her expression dropped in thought. "She should start mellowing out. Or she'll be sleeping."

"No, we don't need help," Mapleleaf said, "But if you want to help, then fine." She didn't want to argue with Blackleopard. Blackkit, she reminded herself, but she didn't see the difference.

At the other end of the camp, an older grey warrior was trying to keep herself busy. Thunderstorm usually wasn't affected by the aftermaths of the battles her clan got into...but this time it was different. Many of her good friends were terribly wounded, and several of her favorite cats were dead. Not to mention her late mentor, Blackleopard. What are the triplets thinking? She wondered. Before she could dash the thought out of her head, another morbid thought followed. How are they going to cope without her? They're barely old enough to become apprenticed. And Whitekit! Of all the things to happen to that kind kit, why did it have to be her mother? ... Why couldn't have it been me?
She quickly shook her head to dash away the thoughts. Thunderstorm constantly worried about the kits, for in a way, they were related to her. She could almost be their big sister.Blackleopard was almost too old for kits when she had them, and Thunderstorm was a full adult now. But she felt like a daughter of Blackleopard anyways, and now all of this...
Again she shook her head to get rid of the thoughts. She needed to put herself to work.
She noticed Mapleleaf and some other cats talking at the other side of the camp. Padding quietly so she wouldn't disturb any sleeping wounded warriors, she made her way to them.

Mapleleaf heard the faint padding of paws, and turned around to see her old mentor, Thunderstorm, behind her. "I feel like you, I know," she said quietly. "You feel guilty for them." She flicked her tail torwards her kits. "There was once a battle where I had to battle my sibling, Fernrows. It was hard, but it was my choice. I... I hurt her apprentice. Bad. Even though I don't have to do with that apprentice, I... I felt guilty all of the time. For Fernrows was my mentor, she was the wise one, she sometimes taught me how to improve my moves, what herbs would heal my scars..." Mapleleaf flicked her ears. "You need to know it's not your help. There's always something you can do: You can help. Fernrow's apprentice wouldn't let me help her." Mapleleaf's throat binded up, like there was something stuck in it. "I felt so bad, I did something wrong and I couldn't undo it. There's one way you can fix everything."

She watched Thunderstorm eagerly lean fowards, and she said, "I can't tell you though. You have ot figure it out." She suddenly realized, Thunderstorm was my mentor, and I'm sounding like a wise old cat, like I'm a mentor and she's the apprentice! Suddenly she thought something. "I'm a deputy, too," she reminded herself. She smiled as she watched Thunderstorm's curious expression, then she padded away.

Thunderstorm shook her head in wonder as Mapleleaf padded away. Her heart bloomed with pride. The only apprenticed she'd ever mentored had become the clan's deputy!
It was a rather bittersweet revelation, for it also brought back the terrible deaths of their leader and deputy.
She heaved a great sigh, and felt a familiar knowing gaze bore into the back of her head. She looked up to meet the uncannily iridescent green eyes of Blackkit herself. The kit's eyes boared into hers, peeling back the layers and seeming to expose everything Thunderstorm was thinking. Then Blackkit smiled a knowing smile, her eyes softening to show concern and understanding.
Thunderstorm smiled back weakly before tearing away as she turned around. She padded away from the strange kit, towards the horrible task at hand. it was high time to count the dead and perform the last ceremony the fallen would ever receive.

My last time seeing Firestar. Mapleleaf's pelt itched uncomfrably. Who would understand? Mapleleaf looked around. Puffball would, but... Mapleleaf shook her head. Did she really want to repeat it to herself?
Full with sorrow, she suddenly knew who, of all alive cats, would help her. Padding over to Blackkit, she whispered a desperate "Help," and collapsed in her sorrow and pain.

Blackkit didn't even need to look into Mapleleaf's mind to know that this job was too much for just her alone. Blackkit's mind reached out, following the ties between the siblings until it bumped into Whitekit's. She found her sister to be sleeping. But Redkit was wide awake, keeping watch over his fragile sister. Black asked Red to wake up Whitekit and tell her to come out, quick.

Whitekit was out next to her sister within moments, sensing through the tie that this was her thing. She saw Mapleleaf, and immediatly felt her heart go out to the warrior. She rushed to Mapleleaf's side, the size difference almost comical. Whitekit licked the warrior's shoulder comfortingly, and crooned in a soft voice "it'll be ok, Mapleleaf."

Blackkit backed away to a spot not too far away, so she could keep watch over the two while watching the camp peice itself back together.

Redkit, freed of his duty to Whitekit, went off to see if his strength could be of use elsewhere. He hated soppy, sad, emotional stuff. He wasn't the emotional thinking type. As he padded towards the chaos, he thought first of how this will set back his time to be apprenticed. But as he started thinking about it, a feat in itself, he realized this could be his time to shine. Perhaps he'll show his muscle and strength and be apprenticed sooner!

Whitekit sat next to Mapelead, talking to her soothingly. "It'll all be ok, Mapleleaf. I know it can be too much. What's all troubleing you?"

Greif washed over Mapleleaf. I shouldn't explain. It's too much for the little kit, she'll burst into tears!

Whitekit could sense Mapleleaf's unease in telling her. The kit fully understood why. Everybody thought since she was so weak on her feet, that her mental capacity for hardship was just as fragile. And it bothered her to no end. She mentally rolled her eyes, but kept a gentle expression on her face. In the end, she decided to do a two-way sharing system, one she often used on her mother before...everything.
On the days her mother looked troubled, Whitekit would babble and babble about anything and everything that happened that day, about all the hard stuff that happened to her and that she overcomed. And she talked and talked until she goaded her mother into conversation. Once she had Blackleopard's attention, all she had to do was subtly re-direct the conversation until she knew just what was bothering her mother's heart and head.
So Whitekit did so. She told Mapleleaf of all the trouble she and Red and Blackie got into. Both noticed, and unnoticed. She told Mapleleaf of all the times she purposefully goaded Blackkit and Redkit into fights, just to have a laugh and to see their faces when they got in trouble. Whitekit talked and talked, about just about anything.
Finally getting closer to the point, she said "I know everycat thinks I'm weak and all. An' I know I am. But I got a strong heart, and that's all that matters. I cried and broke down when I learned of mommy's death, but...I realized it wasn't going to help the clan out at all if all I did all the time was pad up to Red and Blackie and have them comfort me while I cried for everybody. It wastes time and stregnth, when I could be out helping other cats out. So I slept it off, and gained energy, and now I'm here to help you, Mapleleaf. Maybe you'd feel better to tell me, so maybe I can cry with you or for you. Or maybe I can just listen. But you need at least some help, Mapleleaf. Then it'll all be ok. You'll see."

Mapleleaf's eyes widened. She finally said, "That's fine," and collapsed on the ground,, fallen asleep.
